Origin of the name of the town

Until 1934 the village had been called Vasiliko. From 1934 to 1950 it was named Tsarevo, and in the period 1950-1991, it is called Michurin. Since 1991 up to the present time the name has been Tsarevo. The new name is a Bulgarian version of Vasiliko (from “vasilevs”, which in Greek means tsar, king).

A short history of Tsarevo

According to the Turkish traveller Evliya Chelebi, who passed through Vasiliko in the 17th century, here there was a fortress called Vasilikoz. People of Prince Vasil built it. As a matter of fact, he was a grandson of the Byzantine emperor Constantine.

According to another hypothesis, on the other hand, the name Vasiliko comes from the phonetically close Bosilek, the name of a village in the Karnobat district, from where the first settlers arrived. Probably, among the founders of the town, there were also expatriates from the settlements in Stranzha Mountain.

With this name Vasiliko, the Arab geographer Al Idrissi mentioned the settlement as early as the 12th century. The primary industries at that time were fishing, logging and animal husbandry.

After Bulgarian Liberation in 1878, Tsarevo remained within the borders of Eastern Rumelia. It finally became a part of Bulgaria after the Balkan War in 1912. In 1913, similarly to other Black Sea cities (Primorsko, Pomorie, Sozopol and Nessebar), refugees from Eastern Thrace settled here.

In 1967 Tsarevo was declared a climatic seaside resort of national importance. Besides tourism, the other primary industry for the city is fishing. During the period of socialism, in Tsarevo there was also a shipyard whose activity declined after 1990. At the present time, its massive structure lays in the south of the city, at the exit from Tsarevo towards Varvara village.
